| No longer is the beverage associated with Granny’s parlor or Chinese takeout. Instead, today’s tea drinkers are savvy consumers who prefer to sip a chai instead of a coffee.
Caffeine purveyors such as Starbucks have expanded their tea offerings to cash in on the trend, but Bret and Kerstin Wingert knew a niche still existed for a retailer that catered exclusively to the tea trade.
Last year, the pair opened Souvia, a specialty tea store, inside an 800-square-foot retail space in Moon Valley. Within six months, the pair had added two business partners and expanded operations to include a second store in Scottsdale, which opened Jan. 15. The Wingerts, who honed their tea drinking skills while living as expatriates in Japan, were sold on the health benefits of tea years ago, but building a business around the idea took years to come to fruition… |
